IMPRESSIONS

It was definitely a fun season, and the general idea that Red and everybody that worked on it developed works well.

One problem with the Rotisserie format (just adding up total points) is that all weeks are not the same -- for example Red made a really good call and started Kristin Bell in the final week and earned 8 points. In an earlier week, people also made a good call and started Jessica Simpson, who produced 30 points. Rewarding the Jessica Simpson pick 4 times as much seems out of whack. A 34-17 win is just as impressive as a 68-34 win.

And I'm not sure that I would exactly define my season as "lucky". I was no good at the game in the beginning, was 2-5 with so few points that I had to avoid losing the rest of the way. I ended up going 7-0-1 from there, in almost every case against teams in the race that were submitting teams each week. In the playoffs, however, there certainly was a huge element of luck in having the Bears on Sunday night football. Thankfully, the Lions have put up no such distractions . . .

I would still like to try a draft . . . drafts are fun and they would add a prediction factor as well as requiring more than just running Wilhud and Tomkat out every week.

Playoff match-ups, week 1, and thoughts on the season

So the playoffs are set. Carol Seaver and Ponch, the top two seeded teams, get byes this week. Next week, Carol will face the lower-seeded team to come out of this week's first round of playoffs, and Ponch will face the higher-seeded team to prevail.

Playoff week one match-ups:
AJ Simon vs. Colt Seavers
Isaac, Your Bartender vs. Moogie

Some general thoughts on this season:

I thought that this league worked well. There were some issues to be ironed out early on, but in all I thought this was fun and successful.

It does seem that A.J. Simon and Colt Seavers are really quite lucky. They would have been the ninth and tenth seeded teams, respectively, had we done a rotisserie league, but instead they both made the playoffs. And will be playing each other, in a battle of the low scorers.

Rudy, on the other hand, must be the most unlucky person who played this season. She had the most points of any player in the league, but didn't manage to make the playoffs. Neither did Mrs. King, who would have been the fifth seed had we just used cumulative points. And despite all of my complaints with choosing the head-to-head format, I would have missed the playoffs either way (although I would have been in seventh place had we used cumulative points).

This has been a long season, and for those who continued to post teams week after week, even after being eliminated from the playoffs, I thank you. I think that involved participants makes for a far more interesting league. I definitely want to do this again, although I think we should take a little break between seasons.

I think that this season was a bit long, so next time around I would like to shorten the season and use a rotisserie format, rather than head-to-head. But we can discuss all of that when we start planning for season two.

For now, good luck to the eight teams that made the playoffs. And there won't be an accessory of the week throughout playoff season.

Overall (and final) Standings, Week 15

1. Carol Seaver, 12-3-0, 768 points
2. Ponch, 10-5-0, 722 points

Playoffs this week, instructions for going forward

The playoffs begin this week. The format is easy. The first and second place teams get a bye this week, and the third place team plays the sixth place team, while the fourth place team plays the fifth place team. Only the top six teams make the playoffs. No other teams else play on.

I am in the process of scoring the league from last week but might not be able to finish until later today. If you aren't going to be around when I post last week's results (and therefore won't be around to know for sure who made the playoffs), then just post your team now. If you end up not making the playoffs, your team just won't count.

And if you are Jewish and have to be celebrating tonight and can't be on the computer, post your team before the sun goes down. I won't honor any "it was Yom Kippur, I couldn't post" excuses.

Finally, please note the word verification at the bottom of your post. Last week someone didn't notice it and posted a late team. That excuse won't work this week. Make sure your post goes through before midnight.

Thanks!
