A-list problem

We have a little problem in our fantasy league. This is something I should have figured would eventually happen, but I didn't and so now we have to create a solution.
Someone has chosen two A-listers this week. We need to decide how to rectify the situation.

First, I will put the name of the A-listers in a hat and pick which one will be on the team this week.

But we need to decide what to do about the empty seventh spot on the team (vacated by the A-lister not picked out of the hat). There are two options and I would like input from other members of the league by COB today.

1.) The person choosing two A-listers has to just be one player short this week.
2.) The empty spot will be filled by someone on the player's team from last week. We will put the names all of the non-A-list players not on the team this week into a hat and randomly choose a player. That player will be on this team for the week.

I am STRONGLY in favor of the second option. Since we have a system where someone can just not make a new team at all in a week and gets to use all of the players from the week before, it seems unfair to penalize someone who inadvertently chose two A-listers by forcing an empty spot on that team.

There is no issue with unfairness because of subsequent news that has come out, since the name will be randomly chosen out of a hat (I will choose and and I will have someone else in the league watch).

Please let me know your thougts by COB.

And just in case another scenario happens in the future: if someone picks a team of eight people, for instance, we will just pull a non-A-list name out of a hat to see who gets eliminated.
If someone doesn't choose enough players (putting only six on a team), the solution to that problem will be the same solution to the problem we are faced with today.

Friendly Reminder

Please put your teams in alphabetical order (by last name), alphabetized in the sub-groups women and men. It makes it much, much easier to score. (I know sometimes a name is such that one doesn't know where it falls in alphabetical order, like Kid Rock--that's fine, just do your best.)

I can score next week's results. If someone wants to back me up, let me know.

Accessory of the Week -- Week 7

Moogie and I pick COFFEE as the accessory of the week. Any celebrity carrying a cup of coffee -- Starbucks or any other kind -- wins the extra point. Good luck!

By the way . . . scoring is a royal pain in the arse so thanks to Red Fraggle and the others who have scored for doing such an amazing job each week.

Week 6 Points

The points in regular type were compiled by Moogie and Laura Ingalls Wilder. The points in italics are Red Fraggle's scoring--Red only counted the celebrities that people chose this week, so there may be some other scores Red doesn't agree with that she didn't check because they don't matter to any week six match-ups. When Red Fraggle agreed with the scores, she didn't make any notations. After the score discrepancies are resolved, any changes needed to be made to head-to-head matchups or overall stats will be made.

The future is here

As some of you have probably already seen, on the inside pages of this week's Us Weekly the magazine ran photos of what they "think" certain celebrity children will look like.

Just to nip any potential controversy in the bud, these photos will not count as photos of the parents. So, for instance, a photo of "Suri" will not count as a photo of Tom and a photo of Katie, a photo of "Sean Preston" will not count as a photo of Britney and a photo of K-Fed, etc.

I kind of think all of this would go without saying, but I figure it is better safe than sorry.

Thoughts, week 5

I really, really hate head-to-head. How did I allow Ponch to talk me into this? Of course, I'm sure Ponch is just loving head-to-head right about now.

This wasn't a particularly high-scoring week, which isn't surprising based on the fact that no one picked Pamela Anderson. There were a few very close matches this week, with Rudy losing to Colt by three points, me losing to Moogie by three and A.J. Simon losing to Mrs. King by four.

Those who picked Avril Lavigne, Deryck Whibley and Matthew McConaughey were at a definite advantage, as they were the highest-scoring celebrities chosen, although both Rudy and I chose all three and ended up with losses regardless. On the other hand, there were a number of matches where neither competitor chose any of those three celebrities.

The hat accessory didn't come up a lot, but was featured a few times, adding two points to Vanessa Minillo, two points to Lachey, and a point each for K-Fed, Eminem, Gyllenhaal, Timberlake and Locklear (unfortunately for those who picked Heather, that hat ran in the fashion police). Let's see if the pet accessory from next week has more of an impact.

We no longer have any teams without a win--Willis pulled one out this week! We also have two teams with more than 300 points and four teams with less than 200. There's quite a range of scores right now--it will be interesting to see if that tightens or whether the gap just gets bigger (and whether it even matters, in light of head-to-head).

Accessory of the week, week 6

This week's accessory:

A pet. The pet must be alive (so no pet rocks!). The celebrity doesn't have to be carrying the pet, but the celebrity must clearly be "with" the pet. Dogs, cats, lizards, birds, ferrets, hamsters--all fair game!

Week 6 matchups

Thoughts on week 4

This was generally a tough week, with an unprecedented number of teams (five) scoring less than 25 points. And four of those teams scored less than 20 points. By contrast, only two teams over the first three weeks scored less than 25 points (and one of those teams was a zero in week 1 because no team was posted). Other than the non-post team in week 1, no one has scored less than 20 points before.

The cruelty of head-to-head has become more evident as the weeks wear on, best exhibited by Mrs. King's 12th place standing (in a points-based league she would be in 5th), although there is also a flip-side, as best evidenced by Spellbound's 5th place standing (in a points-based league she would be in 12th). When comparing head-to-head scores with cumulative points, only four teams (Carol Seaver, Red Fraggle, Moogie and A.J. Simon) would be in the same place regardless of which scoring system we used. (Note: A.J. Simon would actually be tied for 14th place, but in a tie-breaker situation would be pushed to 15th because he lost his head-to-head matchup with Ferris Bueller, the team with which he is tied.) Colt Seavers, Ponch, Laura Holt, Spellbound, Ferris Bueller and Snarf are current beneficiaries of the head-to-head system, while Rudy Huxtable, Isaac, Your Bartender, Mrs. King, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Blair Warner and Willis Jackson would be better in a cumulative points league.

Not that it matters, as our league is head-to-head: I just thought the comparison was interesting. It will also be interesting to see, as the season wears on, whether the discrepencies even out and most teams end up closer to where they would have been in a point-based league. Also of note is that we are now left with only one undefeated team as well as only one team without a win.

Other than Keira Knightley and Kate Bosworth, there were no huge point getters this week: Johnny Depp came in with 11, and then Ashley Judd was fourth with seven points. The A-list players were largely silent, which probably accounts a bit for the lower-than-usual scores of most teams.

Alphabetical Order: A Beautiful Thing

It would be greatly appreciated if, when posting teams, people try to do so in alphabetical order. It isn't a requirement, but scoring can take awhile, and a lot of times it is just because it is tough to figure out who is on everyone's team. Putting things in alphabetical order would literally cut a half hour or more out of the time it takes to score everyone's team.

Also, when posting, you type your team in the large text box, but above that there is a box that says "Title." It would be great if you could put your team name in that box. Some people leave it blank, and it makes it just a little more difficult to identify whose team it is (I can just look at the stamp on the bottom of the post, but it's just easier in the title).

Thanks!

Playoff Structure

I would like the playoff structure to be as follows:

Immediately after the end of our regular season (15 weeks total), I would like a six-team playoff.

Playoff Week 1: Teams 1 and 2 get byes. Team 3 plays Team 6, Team 4 plays Team 5.
Playoff Week 2: Highest seeded winner from playoff week 1 plays Team 2, the lower seed plays Team 1.
Playoff Week 3: The winners from playoff week 2 play each other.

Week 4 scoring

I will score this week. If someone wants to back me up by double-checking, let me know.

This week we have AJ's accessory of the week: food. AJ has provided some clarification on when this "accessory" will count for a celebrity:

"1) If you have food on you or in front of you, that counts. 2) If you are in a restaurant or supermarket or buying something at a food vendor, that counts. 3) Anyplace where food is available, but not the point, like a bar, a baseball game, a movie theater, a book store, a Starbucks, walking past a vendor, the Kidurban house, etc., doesn't count unless rule 1 applies."

Week 3 edit

I made a mistake on counting points during week 3--I said Jim Carrey had four points, when in fact he had five. Not that it really matters, because no one chose Jim Carrey in week three. But I am correcting the original post regardless.

Scoring for this Week

Yes, the preliminary scores, as Red surmised, were without the sunglasses add-on (also known as the "Double Tom Cruise's points rule". Since next week won't have the sunglasses, I figured posting the prelimary scores with sunglasses would be misleading. Two questions for the league: Red outlined a rule that advertisements do not count. I took that to include the "Star Style" section (82-85 if you're playing along at home), since there's no text and just prices and goods. Also, is a n accessory a straight good? Or if you're wearing sunglasses and you're barefoot, should you lose points? I just added for this week, but I can see if people have a difference of opinion.

Head-to-head matchup results, week 3

Again, this is based on the point totals I came up with, not AJ's. If AJ comes up with different totals after double-checking his scores, he and I will discuss and I will make any necessary amendments.

Laura Holt, 55 points vs. Isaac, Your Bartender, 36 points
Red Fraggle, 75 points vs. Laura Ingalls Wilder, 56 points
Moogie, 72 points vs. Rudy Huxtable, 58 points
Carol Seaver, 82 points vs. Willis Jackson, 33 points
Colt Seavers, 48 points vs. Ponch, 59 points
Snarf, 38 points vs. Blair Warner, 26 points
AJ Simon, 20 points vs. Spellbound, 54 points
Ferris Bueller, 58 points vs. Mrs. King, 53 points

My scores for week 3

I offered to be AJ's back-up scorer this week, and my results are quite different. I am pretty confident that I am right because I went back and double-checked every score. I think that most of the discrepencies with AJ can be attributed to AJ not counting sunglasses.

So here are my results. When they differ with AJ's, I have italicized them. If it isn't italicized, I got the same score as AJ for that celebrity. If AJ didn't list a certain celebrity, I assumed his point total for that celebrity was zero.

Tobey Maguire (1)? This was a picture of Spider-man that they claimed was Maguire, but it also kind of looked like the classic MTV Movie Award moment when Ellen Degeneres came out as Spider-man and then said to her co-host, Kirsten Dunst, "I think we all have a little Tobey Maguire in us. Right, Kirsten?"

Nigella Lawson's Favorite Week

Liberated from the "nutritional imperative," we've become free to write our own culinary agendas--to eat for health, fashion, politics, or many other objectives--in effect, to use our food in ways that often have nothing to do with physiology or nutrition. "We love with it, reward and punish ourselves with it, use it as a religion," says Chris Wolf, of Noble & Associates, a Chicago-based food marketing consultancy. "In the movie Steel Magnolias, somebody says that what separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize. Well, we accessorize with food." -- from this article.

Next week's accessory is food. Whether it's Mischa Barton arguing at Taco Bell with Brandon Davis, Ryan Phillippe taking Ava to the supermarket (He's just like us!) or Jessica Alba, um, sucking on a lollipop (you might say they won't run this two out of three weeks, I say, don't bet on it), any connection that your celebrity has with food in the picture will be worth extra points.

Scoring this week; amendment to week one scores

I believe that AJ Simon has offered to be our official scorer for this week. AJ, is this correct? If so, AJ gets to pick this week's accessory--just announce it whenever you want, but the sooner the better, probably.

If AJ is scoring, I can do the double-checking, although I won't be able to do so until Sunday (and perhaps not until pretty late on Sunday). If AJ isn't scoring, does someone else want to? If not, I can do it, but again--the scores won't be posted until Sunday.

Finally, I have to make two changes on the week one scores. None of this changes any match outcomes or standing placements. But everyone who had Nicole Kidman in week one gets an extra point--there was an inset I hadn't originally noticed. So that means that Red Fraggle, Rudy Huxtable, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Isaac, Your Bartender and Carol Seaver get an extra point. I will reflect this in the most current standings (posted from week two) as well as the week one standings and week one head-to-head.

And AJ Simon and Spellbound get another point for Heather Mills, who was on the cover of Us Weekly that ran in the background of a Janet Jackson photo. No points for Paul McCartney because although his name appears on the cover, you can't see his picture (he is cropped out).

Don't forget to make your picks on or before Sunday!
